Caving

Half an hour’s walk away lie the entrances to the cave system of Cova des Pirata, Cova des Pont and Cova de sa Piqueta.

The entrance to the Cova des Pont, fitted with a metal grille door, lies south-east of the path from S’Estany d’en Mas to the buildings of Can Frasquet, beneath tall trees among the shrubs. The cave connects to the “Pirate Cave” and contains an underground lake.

The cave system as a whole is over 2,025 metres long. For an agricultural exhibition and the fairs and festivals in Manacor, the Cova des Pirata was developed into a show cave in 1897 and has a number of made-up paths. The Cova des Pont likewise has some made-up paths.

Please wear sturdy footwear. Torches and safety equipment are very useful. You enter at your own risk.

Testudo hermanni — Hermann’s tortoise

Hermann’s tortoise is a small to medium-sized land tortoise about 20 centimetres long with a rigid plastron. It is found across large parts of the European Mediterranean — from Spain through southern France, Italy and the Balkans to the European part of Turkey.

About 20 minutes away, on a walk heading south, you will find several of these handsome creatures in the nature reserve and can observe them in a sizeable population.

The walk to Cala Varques

On the shore of Cala Varques there is a larger beach, some 70 metres long. You can reach the bay in about 40 minutes’ walk from Cala Romantica.

The bay is framed by the headlands Punta de Llevant towards the neighbouring bay of Racó de sa Teula to the south and Punta d’en Barrafau towards Cala Falcó to the north.
